What Are Macronutrients in Pet Food?
Macronutrients are nutrients present in relatively large amounts in the diet. When pet owners talk about food macros, the conversation usually centers on protein, fat and carbohydrates. Fiber is often reported alongside them because it is useful when interpreting a guaranteed analysis.
These numbers can help you understand and compare foods, but a macro profile is not the same thing as a complete nutrient profile. Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, energy intake and other factors also contribute to nutritional adequacy.
How to Read a Pet Food Guaranteed Analysis
The guaranteed analysis is the part of a pet food label that reports selected nutrient values. Depending on the product and market, you may see crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber and moisture, along with other information.
Crude Protein
Crude protein is an analytical value associated with the nitrogen-containing components of the food. It is useful for comparison, but it is not a complete description of amino-acid quality, digestibility or the overall adequacy of a diet.
Crude Fat
Crude fat is an analytical measure of fat content. Because fat is energy dense, two foods with similar protein percentages can still provide different amounts of energy per gram.
Crude Fiber
Crude fiber is a specific analytical fraction and should not be treated as a measurement of every type of dietary fiber in the food.
Moisture
Moisture tells you how much water is present in the food. It is especially important when comparing canned, fresh or gently cooked food with dry kibble.
Dry Matter vs As-Fed: Why the Difference Matters
An as-fed percentage describes the nutrient concentration in the food as it is sold, including its water. A dry-matter percentage removes the water mathematically. This gives you a common basis for comparing foods with different moisture levels.

Example: Calculating Dry-Matter Protein
Suppose a food contains 26% crude protein and 10% moisture:
26 รท (100 โ 10) ร 100 = 28.9% dry-matter protein
The calculation does not create additional protein. It simply expresses the same reported protein concentration after the water portion has been removed from the comparison.
Protein: Compare Percentage and Protein per Calorie
Protein is made from amino acids and contributes to many physiological functions. However, a higher number on the label does not automatically make a food the right choice for a particular dog or cat.
When calorie information is available, a second comparison can be useful: protein grams per 1,000 kcal. This connects the protein number to the energy density of the food.

For example, if a food has 26% protein and provides 380 kcal per 100 g, the label implies approximately 26 g of protein per 100 g of food. The comparison value is therefore about 68 g protein per 1,000 kcal.
This metric is still a comparison tool. It should not be interpreted as a personalized protein target.
Fat and Calorie Density
Fat is an energy-dense nutrient and also supplies fatty acids. This means two foods with similar dry-matter protein can have noticeably different calorie densities when their fat and other energy-yielding components differ.
That is why looking only at a single macro percentage can miss an important part of the picture. For practical label comparison, consider protein, fat, moisture, estimated carbohydrate fraction and calorie density together.
Estimated Carbohydrates and NFE
Carbohydrate is not always printed as a single guaranteed-analysis percentage. When enough label information is available, an approximate carbohydrate fraction can be estimated using nitrogen-free extract, commonly abbreviated as NFE.

This is a calculation by difference. It is not a direct laboratory measurement of total carbohydrate, so the result should be described as an estimate.
Ash is important here. If the label does not provide a usable ash value, this calculator deliberately leaves the NFE estimate unavailable rather than treating missing ash as zero.
How to Compare Wet and Dry Pet Food
Wet and dry foods can look very different when you read the percentages directly from their labels. The main reason is moisture. A wet food may contain a large amount of water, while kibble generally contains much less.
For a fairer comparison, calculate the dry-matter protein, fat and fiber for each food. If calorie information is available, also compare protein per 1,000 kcal. These calculations help separate the effect of water from the reported nutrient concentration.
Macro Counting Homemade Pet Food
Macro counting can be useful when examining a homemade recipe, but it is only one layer of diet analysis. A recipe may have an appealing protein, fat and carbohydrate profile while still being short of or excessive in important micronutrients.
For a long-term homemade diet, the relevant question is not simply whether the macros "look balanced." The complete recipe needs to be evaluated for energy, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and other nutritional requirements.
This calculator can therefore help you understand composition, but it should not be presented as a complete homemade-diet formulator.
Common Pet Food Macro-Calculation Mistakes
1. Comparing Wet-Food Protein Directly With Kibble Protein
Different moisture levels can make direct as-fed comparisons misleading. Use dry-matter calculations when moisture differs substantially.
2. Treating Guaranteed Analysis as an Exact Recipe
Reported guaranteed-analysis values are useful label information, but they do not provide a complete quantitative breakdown of every nutrient.
3. Calling NFE an Exact Carbohydrate Percentage
NFE is calculated by difference. It is better described as an estimated NFE or estimated carbohydrate fraction.
4. Ignoring Calories
A percentage describes concentration. Calorie density tells you how much energy is delivered by a given amount of food. Looking at both can produce a more useful comparison.
5. Choosing Food From Protein Percentage Alone
Protein is important, but one number cannot establish overall nutritional adequacy or suitability for an individual animal.
6. Treating Missing Values as Zero
If ash or another optional value is not provided, it should not automatically be assumed to be zero. This calculator keeps unavailable results separate from actual zero values.
